This past weekend I had the privilege and honour of joining my good friend and teacher, Jenni Morrison-Jack from Ihana Yoga, at the first ever Wanderlust Festival Australia. Jenni had been asked to be one of the presenters at the festival, and she in turn asked if I wanted to assist her in running her workshops. I already feel pretty special that I get to work with Jenni almost daily, but getting the opportunity to join her at one of the world’s biggest Yoga Festivals took it to the next level.
On their website, Wanderlust Festivals are described as “all-out celebrations of mindful living” and this weekend was indeed three WANDER-ful days of celebration of life. An atmosphere full of love and laughter to nurture the soul, an abundance of healthy, local, yummy foods and drinks to nourish the body, and lots of amazing and inspiring workshops, talks, meditations, performances, music to tick all the other boxes of goodness. Both of Jenni’s workshops were fully booked, participants of these later approaching us with massive smiles and calling us “magic workers” for helping them get happy hips, reduced joint pain (and good, sore butts). Others commented on how they had never tried yoga quite like this before, and how good it felt! How their spines had been mobilised and the breath moved into forgotten parts of their body. Just to be a part of sharing that experience with others was humbling and deeply gratifying - and made transporting 2kgs of heart chakra rose quartz and a 2 kgs spine totally worth it (check out #adventuresofsallythespine). Remember we're running a yoga retreat in Bali in May if you want to learn more about heart chakras, happy hips, supple spines and good sore butts - read about the retreat here.
While we were camped out on an island in the middle of the famous Sydney Harbour, it felt like we were in a far-away land of sparkles and glitter, yoga and laughter. The somewhat tropical weather blanketed us in a warm, humid hug. The sun was never too scorching and the rain held back until night time when we were tucked away in our tents. Even light drizzle in the mornings cleared the way for delicious afternoons and evenings bathed in warmth. And speaking of delicious - ever tried a (refined sugar-free) coconut-whip-ice-with-raw-tim-tam-slam sundae??!! Um yes, I believe I renamed it “sex in a cup”.
I got to try yoga classes with international teachers, re-visit with some old faves, finally made it to a meditation with Swami Govindananda, sang from the top of my lungs with the beautiful Suzanne Sterling and spent 1.5 hours on a bolster learning the delicate art of pranayama with the inspiring Maty Ezraty. A friend helped me with fun acroyoga tricks (and scored some free kombucha at the same time). I connected with beautiful people I’d previously only met through online friendships, I danced my heart out to killer beats, had my face painted and bedazzled, my ears filled with wise words, my heart opened, my mind blown.
I made this short video below to give you a taster of my Wanderlust wonder-weekend. Keep your eyes and ears open for the next one, rumour has it they’re looking to take it somewhere even more tropical…
