This is something I say quite a lot. Some people seem to get it, but others look at me as if I'm some young teenybopper trying to be cool. The thing is, there is a bit more to it than a hashtag.
The first time I remember saying it was while teaching a yoga class. It was absolutely not my planned theme but without even thinking about it I started waxing lyrical about fairytales, love, leopard print and Beyoncé. It was as if I was channeling some higher energy and it simply flowed, and so did the class. It was seriously, freaking awesome.
My friend had been in the class and asked me where it came from but I didn't have any specific answers. It was still around the time Beyoncé was embracing her alterego Sascha Fierce, and I think I had just been to see her in concert. I had also just bought a new pair of yoga pants. The first of my fancy pants and the first time I wore them. The 1980s couldn't have thought of a better print : purple tiedyed leopard print -ish. I actually believe they were the ones talking during that class.
Many years ago I came up with a theory about one of my favourite fairytales, Sleeping Beauty. That in fact she wasn't asleep for a hundred years, she was actually having the time of her life up in that castle, she was having a blast and not caring about what people thought of her, doing her own thing and undisturbed by other people's assumptions or judgements or expectations. She didn't need to go looking for love because she had enough in herself. The only one who got through the impassable thorn bush was the most deserving, willing to risk getting cut and scratched and pricked by thorns in order to get to hang out with the love of his life.
So, back to that yoga class. I was probably getting people into Warrior Pose, my favourite. And trying to inspire the students to feel into the pose. Often the tale of the Baghavad Gita will be used to explain the purpose of the warrior, but this was a ladies only group of yogis. So along came fierce - Beyoncé style. The type of warrior who is powerful and brave and strong and bootylicious and kicks the ass of anyone who stands in her way, as she kicks ass with her dance moves and drops jaws with her presence. Be that kind of warrior. Who, at the same time, is kind and compassionate, passionate and soft, humble and brave, feels her heart reach out through her finger tips and isn't afraid to share her love. Be that warrior.
Be that princess on top of the world. Dancing like no one is watching. And dancing as if the whole world were watching and it still doesn't matter. Believe in yourself, know that you have enough love inside. And that there is love outside, coming for you. Own it. Be it. You are it. Fierce with love.
Be brave enough to do what you need to do, listen to the small voice of wisdom inside your heart, and be/feel/share the love. Be brave enough to be you, and love being yourself.
